Roc Stoneworks is an independent informational directory covering stoneworks, masonry, retaining walls, pavers, and hardscape companies in the Greater Rochester area. I built it because finding a reliable stone contractor in Monroe County is genuinely hard — the options are scattered across Google Maps, Yelp, Angi, and Thumbtack with no consistent way to compare quality. This site fixes that by pulling all the data into one place and ranking it transparently.

Who I am: My name is Connor Meador. I run Roc Web Tech — Rochester web design & AI automation. This directory is built and maintained by Roc Web Tech as a demonstration of what we build for local businesses. I grew up in upstate New York and have watched Rochester homeowners get burned by contractors who looked impressive online but turned out to be one-truck operations with no warranty, no drainage plan, and no accountability. I'm not a mason — I'm a technologist who knows how to evaluate contractor quality from public data and build systems that surface it clearly.

How the Roc Score works: Every company in this directory is ranked by a composite 0–100 score (the “Roc Score”) calculated from seven weighted factors: Google rating (30%), Google review count (20%), Yelp rating (10%), Yelp review count (10%), BBB accreditation status (5%), review recency (10%), and service area coverage — meaning how many of the 10 Rochester-area suburbs the contractor serves (15%). A Bayesian prior prevents brand-new businesses with 5 perfect reviews from outranking established contractors with 200+ reviews at 4.7 stars. The formula is recalculated weekly and published in full on the methodology page.

No paid placements — ever: Businesses listed here cannot pay for a better rank, a featured badge, or removal of a competitor. The order is determined entirely by the Roc Score algorithm. If a company calls or emails asking to “get listed at the top,” the answer is no. The only way to improve a Roc Score is to earn more verified reviews, serve more of Monroe County, and maintain BBB accreditation. That's by design.

Data sources: Listings are compiled from public sources: Google Business Profiles (via Google Places API), Yelp business data (via Yelp Fusion API), BBB accreditation records (publicly searchable), OpenStreetMap address data (ODbL 1.0 license), and New York State business filings for founding year and entity type where available. No review text is republished — only aggregate rating numbers and review counts, which are factual data, not creative content. Review snippets shown on individual profile pages are ≤120 characters with a direct link back to the source platform.

Coverage and updates: The directory currently tracks stoneworks and masonry companies operating in Rochester and Monroe County suburbs including Greece, Webster, Pittsford, Brighton, Henrietta, Penfield, Fairport, Victor, and Irondequoit. Rankings are recalculated weekly using fresh API data. If a business closes, changes ownership, or its quality drops in the review record, its Roc Score adjusts automatically.
