masonry and natural stonework pricing in Rochester
Published price ranges for natural stone walls, retaining walls, walkways, patios, fireplace surrounds, stone veneer, chimney masonry, and repointing for residential properties across Greater Rochester — designed for drainage, built to outlast the freeze-thaw cycle. Real numbers, not “call for a quote.” Every job has variables — see the factors below — but these ranges cover the majority of Rochester-area work.
Typical Rochester range
Retaining walls $35–$75 per face foot; walkways and patios $25–$50 per sq ft; repointing $12–$28 per sq ft. Most residential projects land between $4,500 and $22,000.
Stonework is a once-a-generation purchase when built correctly. A drainage-failed wall, however, can need rebuild within 5–8 years.
Pricing by service
Each line is a real service we book, with the price band most Rochester customers actually pay.
| Service | Price range | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Retaining Walls (Natural Stone)April – November | $35–$75 per face foot · typical project $4,500–$22,000 | Dry-stacked or mortared retaining walls in local fieldstone, Medina sandstone, or limestone. Designed with proper batter, drainage backfill, and drain tile for Rochester freeze-thaw conditions. |
| Walkways & PatiosApril – November | $25–$50 per sq ft · typical patio $5,000–$18,000 | Flagstone, bluestone, or fieldstone walkways and patios on a properly bedded base. Built to drain — water flows off the surface and through the joints, not into the substrate. |
| Stone Veneer (Exterior & Interior) | $28–$55 per sq ft installed · typical façade $6,000–$18,000 | Adhered natural stone veneer for foundation faces, exterior walls, columns, and interior accent walls. Real quarried stone — not the cast-concrete look-alike product. |
| Fireplace Surrounds & Hearths | $3,500–$14,000 depending on stone, height, and complexity | Interior natural stone fireplace surrounds — full-height stacked stone, formal limestone mantles, or rustic fieldstone. Built to code with proper clearances to combustibles. |
| Repointing (Brick & Stone) | $12–$28 per sq ft · typical chimney $1,800–$4,500 | Removal and replacement of failed mortar joints on older brick and stone — chimneys, foundations, façades. For pre-1930s Rochester homes we use lime-based mortar; portland is wrong for soft historic brick. |
| Chimney Masonry Repair | $1,800–$8,500 depending on extent · full rebuild quoted separately | Rebuilds above the roofline, crown reconstruction, brick replacement, and full repointing for chimneys that have stopped shedding water. The most freeze-thaw-exposed masonry on any Rochester house. |
| Stone Fire PitsApril – October | $1,800–$4,800 depending on size, fuel type, and stone | Built-in natural stone fire pits — wood-burning or gas — sized to a seating diameter that actually works. Fire-brick lining and stainless gas hardware where applicable. |

Factors that affect price
The biggest variables on a final quote. None of these are surprises — we work them out before the job starts.
- Stone type — local fieldstone is least expensive; quarried limestone and bluestone cost more
- Wall height (walls over 4 ft often require engineered drawings + permits in NY)
- Site access — wheelbarrow-only sites cost noticeably more than truck-accessible
- Excavation depth and soil type (clay needs more drainage work than sandy loam)
- Whether existing failed work has to be removed first
- Mortar type for repointing (lime mortar is more expensive and slower-setting than portland)
- Distance from Rochester
How Rochester compares
Rochester masonry pricing runs middle-of-pack for Upstate NY. Be cautious of bids under $25 per face foot for retaining walls — the gap is almost always in the unseen work (no drain tile, undersized footing, no geotextile fabric). The wall looks the same on day one. The difference shows up in year three.
